Aphelion Wait Grenache 2022
FWC Wine of the Year
Another cracking single vineyard expression of Grenache from McLaren Vale. Whilst also from Blewitt Springs, the Wait shows another side to Grenache when compared to the Brini. Where the Brini has Pinosite in spades and is open for business, the Wait is more brooding, structured and age worthy yet not lacking any charm. Some might argue it is more serious.
Aromatically in the black and blue fruit area; mulberry and blueberry, there's also perfume of spice, black tea, forest floor and twig. Plenty of tannin here, albeit pleasantly ripe, that ingrains a stoney, mineral edge to it. Lovely fruit weight, sitting in both the red and blue realm, that balances the mesmerising savoury elements so effortlessly. What a fantastic example of Modern McLaren Vale Grenache that certainly should hold a place on your table or cellar.- Jeremy Muller, FWC.
“Sourced from the Top Bush block on the Wait vineyard in the Blewitt Springs sub-region of McLaren Vale. Planted in the mid 1940’s.” Gets 100% whole bunch. Always good to taste these single vineyard expressions of McLaren Vale Grenache side by side. Well, this is pretty exotic, with loads of spice, rosy perfume and Earl Grey tea, ripe cherry and raspberry. It’s firm and tannic, lots of dust and gravel in feel, crisp cranberry acidity though rich red fruit, ginger biscuits, and lavish pumice stone tannin on a finish of excellent length. Serious and structured, and really very impressive. Drink 2025-2035+. 95+ Points. Gary Walsh, The Wine Front.
